  • Happy Friday!!!
Usually weekends don’t feel like weekends to me because I usually work them- but it actually kinda feels like a weekend! This is going to be goood!!

Today Mike and I had a meeting at Stormtech Performance Apparel. I have done a fair amount of work for them in the past and I am eagerly excited to say- we may continue to do some more work! I have been in their catalogue, voiced their phone system and even did some hosting for them.

Mike and I have been given the challenge to “test drive” the new Stormtech XBR-1. We are going to go hiking, running and exploring while wearing them in windy and rainy climates and document our thoughts. As soon as we got them home we ripped open the jackets out of the plastic bags- fresh with creases and all. I got the XBR-1 in electric blue:

Mike got the jacket in Black (I have the Black one too;)

We picked up our jackets at Stormtech Showroom in Burnaby, BC

Here’s a shot of some of the Stormtech Athletes on the wall. What if I got good enough at triathlons, to be a sponsored athlete? That would be a dream. I have always been obsessed with very athletic people. Maybe because I was always “good” at sports, but never “AMAZING”, I always admired those who had that natural ability. (Like my team mate all through high school- Chelsea Grimson, or my sister in law Nicole, etc)

Here I am waiting in the reception area. I started reading a National Geographic, but there was some gory pictures of a goat getting worked on by a doctor… Props to you smart people who read NG, but I threw it down and cringed a bit.

With my new 18 month contract in voiceover work, I will most likely learn a thing or 2! I am voicing/”teaching” 2 subjects! My first module is on plants, and flower and the angiosperm life cycle of plants.

    NEAT-O mosquito!!!

Well I best be running…. well not running right now…I’m driving to another meeting. 4:45pm is when it starts. Smack dab downtown during rush hour on a Friday. This should be fun….

Have an AWESOME weekend. I can’t wait until we meet again (how does tomorrow sound??)

  • Happy February 1st!

I always look forward to the 1st of each month- not because YAY I get to pay my rent, but because, as many of you know- we feature the “Tomboy That Wears Makeup Of The Month.” The  TTWM Of The Month is a beautiful, inspiring, motivating woman that is putting big energy into the universe. My lovely lady this month is of course nothing short of amazing.

Her name? Skinny Runner (this is what she goes by in the blogging community) Oh, and yes, she is a blogger. I have no idea really how I came across her blog. I am discovering how intertwined this whole blogging world is and I somehow stumbled across her website. I check out A LOT of blogs, and this one stuck. I have her bookmarked and visit pretty much everyday.

My stalking of SR (skinny runner) goes a bit further than just reading her blog. She lives in California now, but is originally from Washington (just below Vancouver, BC). One day she was talking about getting her hair done and how even though she lives in CA, she still gets her hair done by her awesome hairdresser Ashely in Bellingham, WA….Sooooo, seeing as I think SR has a perfect shade of blond, when I decided to change my hair back to blond from brown, you guessed it- I went to Washington to get it done! And Ashley the hairdresser did a fantastic job and I will definitely be going back. So thank you SR for sharing your secrets;)

The reason I like SR so much? She is a super funny, down to earth- what you see is what you get type of girl. She is gorgeous and likes to look good, but she is also not afraid to show sweaty running pictures, or pictures of her in her fishing gear. (She works on her family owned and operated fishing boat 3 months a year and fishes with her family.) She runs a ton of half marathons and marathons throughout the year and get this- SHE IS FAST TOO!

Ok,  I’ll stop gushing, read on as we have a lil chat……

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a 28 yr old trophy wife just trying to figure out how to pick the winning lotto numbers. I dream big.

So, what inspired you to create Skinny Runner?

I wanted to talk about myself. seriously.

Once I started blogging, I realized more what type of blogs I liked, what drew me to them, what interested me, so SR really became the blog that I’d want to read if I wasn’t me. (I swear I’m not that narcasstistic)

I want to motivate people, encourage people, educate people, but at the heart of it all, I want to entertain people. I hope they get a smile or a giggle (or a gut busting, milk shooting out the nose laugh) from what I write.

I definitely laugh when I read your blog..and I get motivated, what are some of your running goals?

Run a sub 3:20 marathon. I’m 54 seconds away but that kinda seems like a lifetime right now.

You are so fast! Would you ever get a coach?

No, at least not at this point in my life. I run purely for myself (wow, does that sound selfish or what?!) and I want to run on my time, when I want, how I want to. I don’t want anyone telling me how to run. I swear I don’t have a problem with authority…

How many races will you do this year? Hmmm thats a good question. Last year I ran 21 and so far in 2011 I’ve ran 2 halfs and a marathon so I think I could safely shoot for 1000. Reach for the stars, right?

21 races in 12 months?? That’s incredible…What has been your absolute most favorite race?

Rock ‘n’ Roll Vegas Marathon in December 2009 was my first marathon and the first time that I BQ (Boston Qualified) so that will always be special, but NYC Marathon takes the cake. It was awesome, the whole experience. Almost surreal.

    (SR at the NYC Marathon)

I would LOVE to run the NYC Marathon. What are some “insider” tips you would give to someone just getting into running?

Get fitted for proper shoes that fit your needs. That’s an easy way to prevent injuries. Everything starts from the feet up. -Sign up for a race. It’s a great way to have a deadline to force you to train and get your runs in. -Buy a few cute, comfortable running clothes. They don’t have to be expensive but things that you feel good in. Who wants to run looking ugly?!?!

Exactly! BTW (here’s a video I made on finding proper shoes) Ok, besides running, what are some other things you enjoy doing?

Does reading People.com count or just make me supremely lame? I love to travel and try to get anyone I know to go on vacation with me. I’m a pretty serious vacationer. I mean, I could go pro at it maybe.

I’ll go with you!!! You always look good, even when your running, what is your favourite beauty product?

If I had to pick only one, I’d say black eyeliner. It makes you look put together even when your life’s a mess. If I could pick another, I’d say dry shampoo. I like messy, dirty hair but greasy, stringy hair isn’t quite as attractive…

    skinny runner 2011

    What is your biggest fear?

My mom dying. I really like her and would like her to stick around for awhile.

    skinny runner

Seems like (from what you post) you are very close with your family. It is nice to see. What is your favourite quote?

“Life is tough but God is good” by Tony Dungy

I like it;) What is your greatest achievement?

Maturing and getting my life together, marrying someone who loves the Lord and loves me. He better or else I’ll beat him…

haha, If you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?

NFL quarterback Tim Tebow: fantastic athlete, amazing work ethic, and incredible character. Now that professional sports, especially the NBA and NFL, are pretty much known for drug charges, rape charges, and paternity lawsuits, Tebow is the anomaly. EVERYONE hates on the guy (‘He’s too much of a goody goody, he’ll never make it in the NFL”) and yet he conducts himself with maturity and grace, sticking firm to his beliefs and morals.

Someone who is great athlete, with a strong work ethic, character and morals would definitely make for a sweet lunch date – Who do you admire?

So it might be obvious I have a Tim Tebow crush… but I admire people who stand up for their beliefs even when it goes against what’s popular. It’s easy to say, hard to do! And my mom, she defines selflessness. I wish I could say that about myself.

I’m sure you are selfless enough SR….What is something about yourself people may not know?

When I was born I came out wearing Christian Louboutins. Actually, I had to wear a girdle-stirrup contraption for a few months when I was born because the doctor thought he heard a clicking in one of my hips which could mean one leg would be shorter than the other. To this day, I blame every bad race on it.

HAHA!  I’m smiling right now, what is something that makes you smile?

Making up words and phrases with my husband… how the heck did we come up with “schwertner doiburger” and what in the world does it mean? We are two peas on the same short bus.

I love how you always call him by a different name, (one day you’ll make headlines- “What will skinny Runner call her husband today???”

And last question…What do you do to RELAX?

Run. seriously. It makes life better and me less crazy.

I think your on to something with all this running. You definitely motivate, entertain, inspire and make people laugh. Thank you so much for doing this interview. Come to Vancouver and do a race??? Or maybe I’ll see you at the NYC marathon sooner than later;)

I am going for a swim, then running tonight with my triathlon club. If I ever don’t feel like working out, I know where to go for a push! Skinnyrunner.com is open 24/7!!

    WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO PARTY TIME!!!

    XOXO

  • Yep, that’s right- I just created my own triathlon. Run, Swim and Spa:)

I woke up at 6:30am, and made it to The Right Shoe by 8am for a 60 minute run with the half marathon group. Nice thing about The Right Shoe is that they have drop in sessions for all of their training sessions, so my friend Jaclyn came and ran with us!

drop in session at the right shoe

Jaclyn and I went to high school together. The great thing is- when I see her- I never have to explain myself. Like who I am, what I’m about….The fact that, yes I am crazy, but I have a heart of gold. She just gets me. I see her, give a high five and away we go…

Jaclyn is thinking about joining my triathlon club… I’m not trying to be pushy or persuasive. But…DO IT!! lol!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!  The first week is the most intimidating, you don’t know anyone, (except me) or how hard it is going to be, etc. After the first week, you get in a groove. You get in a flow and it’s almost like an addiction- a positive one mind you. I crave the training now. My life has never felt more on track than it has in the last 3 weeks. No joke. I feel unstoppable. In my training, my career and my life.

Jaclyn is an all-star cyclist, so she could teach me a thing or 2…or 3… or 4….

I heart you Jaclyn and am soo proud of all you’ve accomplished. Career wise, MBA wise, life wise and athletic wise;)

After our run, I drove home, (I drove to save time because I have a super busy day) put my bathing suit on and went down to my pool for 30 laps. In my schedule game plan, we were to work on drills during the swim, so I incorporated some finger drags and superman flutters.

Then I jumped in the shower and made my way to The Absolute Spa at Century City. It is my good friend Andrea’s birthday tomorrow, so we started today with a SPA day. Here is a photo of my facebook status

Yeeeeep! It has been that fun. The strawberries were chocolate covered btw. I think girl spa days are a must. It was such a blast. I had cucumbers on my eyes tooo

I will get into more details tomorrow. We are on our way to dinner at Coast, I have curlers in my hair and need to get some makeup on.

Hope your weekend has been great. Talk to you sooon! I heart you!!

  • Ahhhh Saturday!

And it’s pretty nice out here in Vancouver too. Not that I’ve been outside much…YET.

    TRI training update;)

I woke up this morning, walked to Tim’s to get a coffee, then pretty much went straight to the stationary bike. On my schedule today was a 90 min bike, at an easy pace- keeping my rpm’s around 90-100…

triathlon training, easy ride, low intensity

I had planned to get outside for my bike today, but I have to do some maintenance on my bike before I take her on the road and I haven’t had time yet. So another long ride on the stand still bike. Since I’ve been training, I notice that time is going by quicker during workouts. I biked for an hour and 30 min and it definitely didn’t seem like that long.

I am a water fiend though. I drank this much water at only 32 minutes into my ride!

When I was done, I got back upstairs and made a shake asap.

What kind of shake you ask?

    Ingredients

    mixed berries
    frozen banana
    cilantro
    parsley
    cucumber
    ginger
    lemon juice
    orange juice
    ginger
    celery

Sound gross? Well it tastes soooo refreshing! YUMMY. It is just like my wake and shake, except with some berries and oj for added sweetness.

After that I had a couple bowls of goldfish. Not vegan and full of preservatives, but they taste so good. Here fishy, fishy, fishy…

Mike and I are letting our Costco membership go after the end of the month, so we stocked up on some frozen berries, goldfish, (chicken, eggs, milk- for Mike), paper towel, walnuts, pickles, my favorite lotion Nutraderm, stuff like that….

Sorry, got off topic…back to training:)

I missed my club bike ride on Thursday to go to the Canucks game. I felt bad for missing it and also was eager to make up for it….until my club mate Klaus (who is training for an IRONMAN!) informed me of some tips written by IRONMAN Champion Chris McCormack. Chris says:

    - Recovery is king! Always err on the side of recovery in your training program.  Recovery takes many forms, and body maintenance (massage, Yoga etc) sleep and rest are imperative to the game and the mix.

-Guilt attached to any missed session is more harmful than missing the session itself.  Guilt is what limits most people in our sport. If you miss a session for any reason, put it behind you and move forward. Don’t play catch up and don’t worry about it. Its done, move on!

Sound advice! I will put that behind me and move on….. Tomorrow I have a 60 minute run with the club and then a swim workout. THEN…the SPA with my girlfriends! Perfect way to end the week!

Hope you are having a great day and enjoying the weekend.

    Talk sooooooooooooooooooooooooooon WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO

  • Sunday… a day to sleep in, relax, pour a Bailey’s and coffee in your pj’s while you lounge around. The most strenuous thing one should do is fluff up your pillows and pour more coffee. SCREEEEECH…RRRRRPPP……STOP RIGHT THERE….. You wanna be a triathlete? No sleeping in for you!!! Get your butt outside and run over for over an hour at 8am in the pouring rain. Here’s me doing some shopping at Costco after getting drenched in the rain
May as well stretch the ol gams while waiting in line. After Costco we went to Kin’s Market for produce.
Once I got home, I happily crossed off today on my program

Wow! 2 full weeks done already! Feeling so good. I am curious as to how my body will feel in 2 months time! Yesterday’s bike was indoors, 75 min.

Some of the people in my club get together for the bike rides on Saturdays and go outside. Me- I’m not quite ready for that yet. I think next week I will do my long bike outdoors and slowly adjust. Hopefully soon I’ll feel confident enough to do the long rides with the group.

My bike is not so fancy! lol. I am rocking the mountain bike right now. On Friday night Mike and I went to a meet and greet at Speed Theory. They are a specialty bike shop in Kits and have bikes for everyone from beginner’s to pro’s. (one of the top end bike’s there is $20,000!! wowzers!)

The owner Jeremy was teaching us the difference between a road bike and a tri bike. They also do custom fitting and the best tune ups in town.

I like this dream catcher made out of bike parts

ohhh wetsuits toospeed theory wet suit triathlon

Compression socks…I have heard of these, but never used them. Have you tried them? Are they worth $55??

Apparently these helmets make you more aerodynamic.

    triahtlon helmet, aerodynamic

Lots of accessories to see at Speed Theory.

The owner Jeremy is extremely kind and uber informative in the cycling world! We had some pizza and some shop talk. Good times.

I will eventually get a better bike, etc. If you are looking for used tri gear, I heard tribc.org has some second hand bikes, and of course Speed Theory has everything.

Ok, day off from training tomorrow, then it’s right into week 3!

Sending you a triathlon of love, health and happiness…. (in no particular order or distance)

    Happy TRI ing!!!

    xoxo
