  • Hello!

Happy Monday to you! Hope you had a fantastic weekend. Here’s to an amazing week ahead!!!

I am feeling terrific right now. Why? Because today is DAY 1 of a 20 day Green Smoothie Cleanse. It has been just over 1 month from my surgery. If you are just tuning in, you can read about my precancerous cells.

Since finding out about the cells and that I would need surgery, I really started to investigate why we get cancer and so many other diseases in the first place. Through my journey, the deeper I dove into it, the more I discovered that eating a plant-based diet is a HUGE factor in starving off disease.

I became a certified Raw Food Chef, took a 4 week series of classes called Feed Life Starve Cancer, and went to the Ocean Resort Hotel, for a Raw Food Weekend. Here’s a video we made about our experience…

This past month, with all the travelling I was doing, I was NOT on a full plant based diet at all. I tried to make good choices while in LA, we went to Trader Joe’s to get a bunch of salad stuff and got green smoothies from Cafe Gratitude, but the plants were few and far between the Mexican food….

I feel in a really good place right now to RE-SET, get back on track and fuel my body with living enzymes, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, and now I present to you my partner in crime for my 20 day Green Smoothie Cleanse:

THE VITAMIX! I cannot tell you how many times I have heard that this is THE blender you need to assist you in rocking a plant based existence. I heard time and time again that this blender is a life changer. So, at one of my classes, I was sandwiched between an older lady who was fighting breast cancer and a hip, earthy yoga instructor. They were both Vitamix owners. Simultaneously I asked them, “Does the Vitamix REALLY change your life?” They both looked at me and in unison I got an upbeat, excitable, “YES!”

    Here is my new friend….

As I unpacked her, I noticed it came with a binder containing recipes, tips, tricks and even a dvd on getting started.

This card is for impatient people like me who are too excited to read or watch a dvd. (I’ll investigate all that soon!)

    Vita-mix Green smoothie cleans

My first smoothie of the 20 day cleanse. I used greens, a cucumber…

    Freshly squeezed lemon juice..

    freshly squeezed lemon juice

    Dates and ginger…

And Voila. My good morning shake

The Vitamix works ridiculously amazing, it opens up all the cell walls of the greens, so it’s very easy for your body to assimilate and digest the green goodness. It makes the smoothies taste better too since it is blended sooo well and it takes 1/4 of the time it took my other blender that left chunks. I am a happy camper.

For lunch I threw in 2 banana’s, kale, mixed berries and 2 dates for a sweeter lunch.

    Lunch….

And dinner, a wack of spinach, 2 dates, banana, lemon and ginger…

Just finished this as I am writing.

I am also drinking Green Tea. Today was also my first day back at the gym since my surgery(It was a rough one!) But I got through it and am feeling extremely optimistic about the next 20 days. I know there will be rough patches, but I also know that when my cleanse is done (on Christmas Day!) I am going to feel amazing. My cells are going to be sooooo happy.

Anyone out there want to join me on this journey? Try a 3 day cleanse?

Here’s a couple good recipes to start with.

    Dr. Oz’s Green Smoothie

    • 2 cups spinach
    • 2 cups cucumber
    • 1 head of celery
    • 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
    • 1 bunch parsley
    • 2 apples
    • Juice of 1 lime
    • Juice of 1/2 lemon

Glowing Green Smoothie by nutritionist Kimberly Snyder

    • 1 1/2 cups water
    • 1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
    • 3-4 stalks organic celery
    • 1/2 head of a large bunch, or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
    • 1 organic apple, cored and chopped
    • 1 organic pear, cored and chopped
    • 1 organic banana
    • Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

I will be giving you more recipes along the way…. Feel free to experiment and come up with your own!

If you don’t want to commit to a cleanse, may I suggest adding a green smoothie to your morning routine?

Take care and we’ll talk tomorrow!

  • Hey there!

November 1st. Surgery day. My dooms day.

I couldn’t sleep last night, kept thinking through things. One thing I thought about was, wether we die young, or live to be 102, life is short. Too short to be fearful to take risks, ask for what you want or worry about what people think. Random late night sleepless thought.

Pulled up at the Women’s Centre at the Vancouver Hospital.

    leslie diamond center, vancouver hospital

I was headed to floor 6.

The surgery was crappy. I’m not going to pretend it was hunky dory, cause it was shitty. Even though I am tough and can make it through anything- I don’t wish that upon anyone. My Leep procedure is done, and now any potential cancerous cells are gone from my body. Mike was holding my hand the whole time, and the doctor and nurses were very kind. I am very tired and out of it right now, so perhaps we can expand on it more at a later date. But again, my plea is that you get a yearly pap done. Cervix cancer can be detected well in advance if you get your yearly checkup.

After the surgery, the nurse said to eat right away and don’t count calories! lol

Mike and I met our friends Eden and Colin for lunch at Organic Lives.

We sat down right before the lunch rush, this place did get BIZY!

    Organic Lives, Vancouver

I got the Sicilian Wrap with a ceaser salad. Ah-maze-ing!

For dessert Mike and I shared the “ridiculous” (that’s really it’s name!) And Colin and Eden shared the “OMG” (yup, that’s it’s name too)

Since I’ve been home I have travelled back and forth from the bed to the couch. This little hellion angel knows when it’s time to pour on his sweetness when I just need some comfort and cuddles.

Here’s my station today… In between watching some Dog Whisperer re-runs. lol

Going to bed now! Tomorrow is a new day. Love and light!

  • Hello!!!

I hope you had an abundant, joyful weekend (It’s the day after Thanksgiving in Canada)!

I didn’t get to be with my family this time around but I still had a great weekend. Tonight I am pumped for my 3rd class of Feed Life, Starve Cancer. It is exactly 3 weeks away until my surgery and I am soaking up as much info as I can to live a cancer-free life!

Look at this abundance of yummy fresh produce.

    feed life, starve cancer

I was a keener and was one of the first to arrive:)

In our last class we learnt why dairy is not a good idea when you are trying to starve cancer.

    - It is not nutrient dense, has large amounts of saturated fat, (which suppresses immune function, slows down the body’s ability to detoxify) Dairy contains dozens of hormones, chemicals, antibiotics and the purpose of cow’s milk is to grow a 90lb calf into a 1000 pound animal! Why do WE consume it? You can get all the calcium you need (and more) from greens (Broccoli and Kale are great sources, as well as beans.

    We made a nut cheese!

I will get you the recipe soon, but the basis of this is macadamia nuts and spices.

    Feed life, starve cancer

Our instructor Eden rolled it to look like a mozza ball…

    Feed life, starve cancer

Ate it on a Mary’s cracker, basil leaf, tomato and the nut cheese. It was delicious. I can’t wait to make it!

Another dairy alternative is Nut Milks. We made milk out of cashews, coconut, hemp and almond.

    Feed life, starve cancer

To make your own nut milk, check out the recipe I put here. NUT MILK RECIPE.

    Feed life, starve cancer

Eden used actual Vanilla Bean pods to flavour the milk. It is a great idea to stay as true to the whole food source as possible….

    Feed life, starve cancer

But I have been using this Vanilla Bean Powder which has been fantastic. I got it at Planet Organic in Coquitlam. I use it for SO MUCH! I heard Whole Foods is about to get this stuff!

    Feed life, starve cancer

Eden told us about a couple cool websites:
Eat Local is about finding fresh produce at local markets in BC, it also has an awesome list of what produce is in season during what months. So cool!

The other site is Still Tasty. Keep it or toss it? A great guide to how long you should let something hang out in your fridge. Or you can use the “When in doubt, throw it out” method..

Tonight is week 3 for the course. Tonight we are covering the dozen Starve Cancer super foods and Simple Delicious 15 min entrees. Woot Woot! I found out about these classes at Feedlife.ca. They are wonderful.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope your week is off to a great start!

    xoxo

  • Hey familia!

Today flew by. I woke up, did my journaling, went for a 30 minute run, did some paperwork..

Then I jumped in the truck to help my lovely friend Diana move out of her place downtown. She was sad to say goodbye to downtown. (I remember that feeling when we left downtown- I still miss it)

    So long Dee’s place…

We worked hard all day getting things cleaned, boxed and moved… By the end of the day, I was in need of some energy! I decided to try a “max veg” from Jugo Juice. It has beets, carrots, ginger, apple juice, celery, cucumber ,spinach and green pepper in it. I thought it was good and it gave me good energy but it had soooo much pulp in it. Shouldn’t they have a  really good juicer at “jugo juice?” Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it, but I wanted more juice=less pulp. (celery pulp is BLECH)

This evening I went to listen to author Vesanto Melina speak at Banyen books in Kits. (Nice photography huh? I focused on the people’s heads and not the author. She is a lovely and very knowledgable lady who has written many books on vegetarianism, veganism and raw.

vesanto melina, raw revolution, going raw

    Here are her books!

Raw revolution diet, going raw, vesanto melina

I enjoyed her presentation, but I had to sneak out early. I was tired from a long day and there was 1 person in the audience who would not be quiet. Bless this persons heart, they were only trying to be heard, but I was getting annoyed and I left…

    Banyen books, west 4th

But not before picking up a couple books first..I had heard the Everyday Raw book was really great and the other one was just pretty and colourful so I bought it…… $55 later…….It’s an investment in moi!

Know what I really need to invest in? A SPA day! I am thinking next week sometime.. I am due.

Now I will make an investment in myself once again by sleeping.
    Talk sooooooooon.

    xo

  • Hey!

How was the weekend? I am reporting back to you as a certified raw food chef! I am so excited! Who’s coming to my first class? I am thinking I will set something up at the community centre to start… and I’ll go from there. Out of the whole “raw food” lifestyle, what are you most interested in learning?

Today we ate our dehydrated pizza’s that we made the night before… YUM

Raw, vegan pizza, raw food foundation

It tasted like it could have been a real pizza, but I didn’t have that thug full lethargic feeling after!

Raw, vegan pizza, raw food foundation

A little stuffed mushroom to garnish our plate of raw chili!

Raw, vegan stuffed mushrooms, raw food foundation

Raw chili is sooo good. When I am not so tired, I will share more info and post recipes and what not!

Raw, vegan chili, raw food foundation

Burgertime! (yes, we ate a lot of food this weekend!)

Raw, vegan burgers, raw food foundation

We talked and I need to cut back on my coffee consumption. Going to transition to some matcha tea to start (and TRY to cut back on the java)

A really cool aspect of the class is where WE the students each have to get up and teach a recipe! We picked out of a hat the recipe’s we would have to make, I got the Mock Salmon Pate… It went really well. Here are my Mock Salmon Pate ingredients..

Raw, vegan mock salmon pate, raw food foundation

I brought my own apron from home to add the Amanda flair I thought my presentation needed, haha.

Raw, vegan pizza, raw food foundation
Just got home to this little bugger who was desperately wanting me to tell him about raw food attention and liver treats..
    Such a doll!

I am shooting (and starring in) a video in the morning with SKN clinic! So I NEED my beauty sleep…Even though I mioght not get as much sleep as I would like tonight….

Even I look like crap in the morning, I will put on some confidence! lol

Get ready for an amazing week! xoxo
